About 67.1 million people watched the presidential debate between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump, a marked increase in viewership from the June debate that ultimately led to President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race.

The debate was hosted by ABC News, but was carried by 17 different networks, according to the Nielsen Company. The June debate between President Biden and candidate Trump was watched by 51.3 million viewers.

Tuesday's audience is far from the record 84 million viewers set in 2016 during the first presidential debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. In 2020, the first debate between President Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden drew 73.1 million people.

According to analysts, Ms Harris appears to have gained more points in the first debate with rival Trump. The former president and his supporters have expressed harsh criticism of the two moderators of the debate, David Muir and Linsey Davis. The two ABC reporters corrected Mr. Trump's statements four times.

There are currently no other debates scheduled between the two presidential candidates, although there have been rumors and the Fox News Channel has publicly offered alternatives. The CBS channel will organize a debate between the candidates for the post of vice president, where the Democrat Tim Walz will face the Republican JD Vance./ VOA
