8 casualties in the English Channel

At least eight people have died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said on September 15.

The incident happened on Friday, shortly before midnight, when the authorities saw a ship carrying dozens of people. The ship was experiencing difficulties and was lying close to the shore in the northern town of Ambleteuse.

A French rescue ship was deployed to the area and rescue services provided medical aid to 53 migrants who washed ashore, France's maritime authorities said in a statement.

"Despite the emergency aid provided, eight people lost their lives," the announcement said.

The announcement added that no other person was found during the search at sea.

The latest incident came almost two weeks after a migrant boat sank in the English Channel as migrants tried to reach Britain from northern France. At least 13 people died, according to the authorities./ REL
