Netherlands less attractive for immigrants

The Netherlands is expected to declare a state of emergency in order to limit the number of asylum seekers entering the country, making it "as unattractive as possible" for migrants.

The Minister for Asylum, Marjolein Faber, from the right wing, has said that such a measure enables the Dutch Government to suspend "very quickly" some parts of the asylum laws.

According to her, the Netherlands will have the "toughest" regulations in Europe for asylum and immigration, and will implement strict border controls.

Faber plans to limit family reunifications, increase the number of people who are deported if they have committed crimes, deny asylum, and reduce the ability to appeal this decision through the courts.

The Dutch government intends to send a request to the European Commission to be allowed to deviate from EU policies on asylum and migration.

"It is time for a drastic change of course", said Faber.

"We are taking measures to make the Netherlands as least attractive as possible for asylum seekers."

It is estimated that around 40,000 asylum seekers arrive in the Netherlands every year.

Critics argue that such a large number of asylum seekers has worsened the housing crisis. The Dutch government can use a royal decree to implement the state of emergency measure in case of a crisis, thus enabling it to take decisions without the approval of Parliament.

This is what happened during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, such a decision must be legally justified, and legal experts have said they are unsure whether this number of asylum seekers - which has remained stable over the years - is enough to declare the country in crisis.

The opposition parties reacted harshly, calling the Government's plan undemocratic./ Rel
