Romania and other parts of Europe continue to face flooding
Flooding in Galati, Romania on September 14, 2024.

Residents and authorities continued their battle with torrential rain and flooding across central Europe on September 15. In Romania, the authorities said that at least four people have died from the floods, in Poland one victim has been reported, while in the Czech Republic four people are considered missing.

The rain has forced rescue teams to engage in some parts of Austria, but also in the Czech Republic and Poland, as residents have been evacuated after the dam in Miedzigorze overflowed, creating a "critical" situation for local authorities.

But Romania is the country that has been hit the worst, as 20 municipalities in eight Romanian counties have been affected by the floods.

More than 5,000 houses were damaged and hundreds of residents were evacuated. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has announced that temporary shelters have been set up for people who are at risk from sightings. He made this announcement while on September 14 he visited one of the hardest hit districts, Galati.

Four people are reported to have died from the sightings in Romania.

The Hydrological and Water Management Institute in Romania has activated the red alert in Galati and Vaslui, where the army is also participating in the rescue efforts, which is trying to reach the residents who are trapped.

The water level in some parts of Romania reaches up to three meters.

Meanwhile, the water management authority in Wroclaw, in southwestern Poland, said the situation was critical after a nearly 30-meter-high dam near the Polish-Czech border had broken, forcing residents to evacuate.

In Austria, dozens of municipalities have been declared disaster zones.

Earlier on September 15, in Poland it was reported that one person has died, while in the Czech Republic four people are considered missing.

In the Czech capital, Prague, the authorities have put measures in place to prevent flooding.

According to the weather forecast, rain is expected to continue in Austria, the Czech Republic, southern Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia./ REL
