US sends another aircraft carrier to the Middle East

The US is preparing to send a second strike group to the Middle East with the aircraft carrier "USS Gerald R. Ford", which will join the aircraft carrier "USS Abraham Lincoln" in the Arabian Sea.

President Donald Trump told reporters that "the aircraft carrier will be leaving very soon," but without giving an exact time.

The deployment of the aircraft carrier and a second strike group to the region comes after Trump warned of "very bad consequences" if Iran does not reach a deal with Washington over its nuclear program.

The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford recently returned from the Caribbean, where it had been stationed since October 2025, when the US increased its military presence in that region before the attack that led to the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Warning from Arab countries

US and Iranian representatives met last week for talks in Oman but failed to reach any concrete results regarding Tehran's nuclear program.

Trump has not ruled out military intervention if Tehran does not agree to limit its nuclear program. Gulf Arab states have warned that any US attack on Iran could escalate into a new regional conflict.

Trump hopes for a deal with Iran

During his first term, in 2018, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement that stipulated limiting Iran's uranium enrichment in exchange for easing sanctions.

Tehran claims its nuclear ambitions are peaceful. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced last year that Iran has enriched uranium beyond the level needed for civilian use.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities last June, during Israel's 12-day war against the Islamic Republic. At the time, Trump claimed that the strikes had "totally destroyed" Iran's main nuclear enrichment facilities, although this was never independently confirmed.

Despite claiming that Iran's uranium enrichment capacity has been destroyed, Trump says he wants a new nuclear deal with Iran. /CNA
