Rubio calls Lavrov: Time to end 'Senseless War'

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov yesterday at Lavrov's request. The secretary stressed to his Russian counterpart the next steps in the Russia-Ukraine peace talks and the need to end the war now. Rubio told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that the United States is committed to working to end the war in Ukraine.

"The United States is serious about facilitating an end to this senseless war," said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.

She said Rubio spoke with Lavrov about the next steps in Russia-Ukraine peace talks and the need to end the war now.

The phone call took place before President Vladimir Putin offered a three-day ceasefire to coincide with Moscow's commemorations of the end of World War II.

Rubio said this week will be crucial in assessing efforts to end the war, which US President Donald Trump has promised to stop on the first day of his presidency.

In an interview Sunday with NBC News' "Meet the Press," Rubio said there were reasons to be optimistic, but there were also reasons to be realistic and that the United States could decide to focus on other priorities./CNA
