Conservation of species and ecosystem/ EU Court bans fishing in part of the

A ban on deep-sea fishing in parts of the Atlantic rich in marine life has been upheld by the EU's General Court.

This means that these areas will remain restricted to help conserve vulnerable species and ecosystems. The decision comes after the same court ruled last month in a German case that Marine Protected Areas should be protected from bottom fishing.

Separate legal actions were brought by the Spanish government and fishermen from Galicia and Asturias, who challenged a 2016 EU rule that banned fishing with nets and longlines in 87 areas of the Atlantic off the coasts of Spain, Ireland, Portugal and France.

When the rules came into effect in 2022, Spain sued the European Commission, claiming it failed to take into account the economic damage to fishermen. It also questioned the scientific methods used to determine how prohibited fishing gears and protected areas were chosen.

The rules were adopted by the EU to preserve deep-sea fish stocks and protect marine life from the dragging of fishing gear along the seabed.

Among other things, these regulations prohibit the controversial practice of bottom-set fishing below a depth of 800 meters in these parts of the northeast Atlantic.

Species found in the depths of the oceans, such as alfonsinos, black vulture fish, round-nosed grenadiers, red sea bass and some shark species, according to the EU, are disappearing quickly because they are vulnerable to fishing and reproduce slowly./CNA
