The US government has ordered immigration officials to halt investigations and operations at farms, hotels and restaurants, according to a report from the New York Times.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has received a directive asking them to refrain from visiting such establishments, which include meatpacking plants and aquaculture facilities. The decision was communicated via an official email, according to information confirmed by three US officials who spoke to the US media outlet 'The Times'.

"Starting today, please cease all investigations and workplace enforcement operations on agriculture, including aquaculture and meatpacking plants, restaurants, and operating hotels," the emails from senior ICE officials read.

The email emphasized that investigations into these industries involving "human trafficking, money laundering, and drug smuggling" should continue.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the report, saying in a statement that they will follow the president's instructions and continue to remove the worst illegal immigrants and criminals from America's streets.

The shutdown of operations potentially reflects the government's concerns about the impact these operations have on vital economic sectors, as well as on electoral support.
