Ukraine receives 1,200 troops from Russia

Ukraine said on Friday it had accepted 1,200 unidentified troops from Russia as part of an agreement reached during peace talks held in Istanbul.

"The bodies of 1,200 dead people have been returned to Ukraine," the Ukrainian headquarters for prisoners of war said.

"According to the Russian side, the bodies belong to Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel."

Last week, Moscow said it would unilaterally hand over the bodies of 6,000 killed soldiers to Ukraine, which Kiev called a "swap."

The agreement was called into question earlier this week after Russia accused Ukraine of not going to pick up the troops, while Kiev hit back by accusing Moscow of playing a "dirty political game."

Earlier this week, Russia said it had handed over the bodies of 1,212 killed soldiers to Ukraine, in the first phase of the agreement reached in Istanbul.

Agreements to hand over the bodies of killed soldiers in exchange for captured soldiers are the only agreements that have resulted from the peace talks in Istanbul.

Russia has rejected calls to halt the invasion of Ukraine it began three years ago and has demanded that Kiev, if it wants peace, give up more territory and that the West stop supporting it militarily./ Rel
