Corruption scandal within the government/ Sanchez: I apologize to the citizens,

The long-running corruption scandal that has dogged the center-left government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Spain deepened today with the resignation of lawmaker Santos Cerdan, who was once a senior figure in the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

Cerdan is accused of being part of a group of politicians who received or solicited bribes from private individuals in exchange for public jobs.

Sanchez, who became prime minister in 2018, is already facing a series of corruption investigations involving his wife, his brother, his former transport minister and one of the minister's aides. All of them have pleaded not guilty. However, the accusations are intensifying and today's resignation of Cerdan, against whom prosecutors say they have "irrefutable evidence", has further worsened the climate against the current prime minister.

In an emergency press conference this afternoon, the Spanish prime minister made it clear that he has no intention of going to early elections.

However, at the same time, he admitted that he should not have trusted Cerdan.

"The Spanish justice system will now decide for him," said the Spanish prime minister.

Sanchez claimed that the ruling party's leadership would be restructured and that the ruling faction would be subject to external control, while at the same time demanding an "apology" from citizens. /CNA
