Plane crash in India/ At least 30 dead so far

At least 30 people died in the crash of an Air India plane this morning.

The plane, which departed from the Indian city of Ahmedabad and was bound for London, crashed minutes after taking off from the runway.

The plane was en route to Gatwick Airport, south of the British capital, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed in a residential area near the airport.

India's CNN News-18 television channels said the plane crashed over the dining area of ??the state-run BJ Medical College dormitory, also killing many medical students.

Rescue teams said at least 30 to 35 bodies had been pulled from the scene and that more people were trapped.

A source told Reuters that the passengers included 217 adults, 11 children and two infants. Of these, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, Air India said./ CNA
