The attack on Senator Miguel Uribe in Colombia has also been commented on by the country's President Gustavo Petro.

The Colombian leader has stated that the attack is linked to "an internationally based mafia," while also mentioning the Albanian mafia.

According to a report by the Spanish daily 'El Pais', the information that has reached the president also includes Dritan Gjika, an Albanian who consolidated a cocaine trafficking network from Ecuador and was captured on May 25 in Abu Dhabi.

"The neighboring country has requested his extradition to face charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and organized crime. He is considered one of the main architects of the expansion of the Albanian mafia in Latin America and key in transforming the port of Guayaquil into part of the cocaine export route to Europe, in an operation that involved Colombian, Ecuadorian and European partners," the foreign media writes.

The president seized the opportunity and requested immediate protection for four political leaders: Álvaro Uribe, María Fernanda Cabal, Abelardo de la Espriella, and Vicky Dávila. /CNA
