Gun attack in Austria/ 10 victims, including 9 students and the perpetrator

Nine people were killed in a shooting at a school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday and the suspected perpetrator is also among the victims, Austrian authorities said.

Police said they believe the attacker acted alone. They said on social media 'X' that 10 people were dead, including the perpetrator, and several were seriously injured.

Mayor Elke Kahr described the events as a "terrible tragedy," the Austrian Press Agency reported. She added that the victims included students and at least one adult. Officials did not immediately provide information on the perpetrator.

Special forces were among those sent to the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, about a kilometer from Graz's historic center, after a call at 10:00 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m., police said the school had been evacuated and everyone had been taken to a safe meeting point. They wrote that the situation was "secure" and no longer believed to be a threat.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, who was traveling to Graz, said the event is a national tragedy that deeply shocks the entire country.

"There are no words for the pain and sorrow that all of us, all of Austria, feel right now," he wrote in a statement posted on 'X'.

President Alexander Van der Bellen said this horror cannot be described in words.

"These were young people who had their whole lives ahead of them. A teacher who accompanied them along the way," the president said. /CNA
