Iran to present nuclear proposal to US soon

Iran said it would soon present a counterproposal to a nuclear deal with the United States, after Tehran said a Washington proposal contained "ambiguities."

Tehran and Washington have held five rounds of talks since April, aiming to reach a new nuclear deal that would replace the 2015 agreement Iran reached with nuclear powers. But US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the deal in 2018.

The two sides have disagreements over Iran's uranium enrichment. Tehran says uranium enrichment is its non-negotiable right, but Washington considers it a "red line."

On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had accepted "elements" of a US proposal, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later said the text contained "ambiguities."

"We will soon present our proposal to the other side through [mediator] Oman," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei.

"This proposal is reasonable and balanced, and we recommend that the American side seize this opportunity," he added.

Meanwhile, the Iranian parliament speaker said that the American proposal did not include the lifting of sanctions, which is a key demand of Tehran.

Trump, who has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran through sanctions since returning to the White House, has repeatedly said that Tehran would not be allowed to enrich uranium under a potential new deal.

Last week, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the US proposal was "100 percent" against the principle of independence. He insisted that uranium enrichment was key to Iran's nuclear program, adding that the US "cannot decide on this issue."

Iran currently enriches uranium to 60 percent purity. This is a very high level compared to the 3.67 percent limit allowed in the 2015 nuclear deal. However, the current level of uranium enrichment is still far from the 90 percent level required for nuclear weapons./ REL
