The EU has reached a new ocean pact that aims to protect Europe's coasts and life around the sea, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice.
The EU's goal is to restore 20% of Europe's marine ecosystems by 2030.
The EU executive also wants to increase the competitiveness of the maritime industry with a new strategy for the sector and a strategy for EU ports.
"Our fishermen work tirelessly to feed us, day and night, in all conditions. However, extreme weather and unfair competition are putting many of them out of business," said the Commission President.
Von der Leyen announced several grants to support small-scale fishing.
Von der Leyen also promised that 1 billion euros will be allocated to 50 projects worldwide for scientists and environmentalists, a third of which will fund research and scientific projects.
The pact should lead to specific legislation to be proposed by 2027./CNA
