Serbia Detains Former Kosovo Police Member

Arbnor Spahiu, a former member of the Special Operations Unit (SOU) of the Kosovo Police, was detained on June 7 by Serbian authorities at the Horgosh border crossing and taken to the detention center in Kanjiza, his lawyer, Arianit Koci, announced.

Through a Facebook post, Koci said that although Spahiu has not been part of the Kosovo Police for three years and lives in Germany, he was questioned about the Banjska case - which concerns the attack by an armed Serbian group against the Kosovo Police in this village of Zveçan, in September 2023.

Kosovo considers this attack a terrorist attack and accuses the state of Serbia of organizing and carrying it out.

"This case is serious and not isolated," Koci said.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has reached out to the Kosovo Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more information on this case, but has not received a response.

Lawyer Koci claimed that Arbnor's detention is a direct reaction to the discovery of Aleksandar Vllajic, who was sentenced to five years in prison by Kosovo authorities days ago after admitting he was involved in espionage as a member of the Serbian Intelligence and Security Agency (BIA).

According to Koci, Vllajic's admission of guilt has proven that "the Serbian BIA operated within the territory of Kosovo and within its security structures."

Serbian authorities have repeatedly detained Kosovo citizens on Serbian territory on suspicion of war crimes. Kosovo authorities have always considered these arrests arbitrary and have demanded their release.

Kosovo and Serbia reached an Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in 2013, with the mediation of the European Union, but there has been almost no cooperation between them on war crimes cases./ Rel
