Seismic tremors in Northern Greece/ 5.3 Richter earthquake near Thessaloniki

A series of aftershocks followed the 5.3 Richter earthquake near Mount Athos, near Thessaloniki, which occurred shortly before four in the afternoon and was felt particularly in Northern Greece, causing material damage.

According to seismologists, this is not a phenomenon we have seen for the first time.

Last year, for about 20 months, seismic activity had begun in the maritime area of ??Mount Athos, peaking last year in May, June and July and we all thought it had subsided. However, it has returned significantly more severely and the data is currently being analyzed, Greek media ERT reported.

"We are studying the phenomenon from the beginning and very carefully, because it is a strange seismic activity, with an even stranger evolution because we thought that last September this process had ended and it is returning with magnitudes that are much greater than last year. The seismic tremor is strange because we see it returning after a long period of inactivity," stressed seismologist Efthimios Lekkas.

He also noted that an assessment of the dimensions of the crack, which is located in underwater space, needs to be made to see exactly what type of earthquake it could cause./CNA
