Merz tells Trump he wants more pressure on Russia

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered his willingness to strengthen ties with the United States on Thursday, as he met with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

"We have a lot in common in our history. We owe a lot to the Americans. We will never forget that," Merz said during a conversation with Trump in front of reporters in the Oval Office in Washington, referring in part to Trump's German ancestry.

Trump has called him a "very respected man."

"We're going to have a wonderful relationship with your country," the US president said. He said US troops would continue to stay in Germany, and that it was a positive thing that Berlin was spending more money on defence.

He described Merz as a figure who won the election convincingly, and jokingly said that Merz seems "difficult."

So far, Trump has counted on French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss key European topics, but Merz appears to have also joined that group.

During the meeting, Merz called on Trump to exert more pressure on Russia in order to end the three-year war against Ukraine.

"You know we support Ukraine, and we are expecting more pressure on Russia," he said.

Germany is the second-largest supporter of Ukraine - after the United States - in military and financial terms, as Kiev fights Russian occupation.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
