President Osmani sets date for local elections on October 12

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has set October 12 as the date for holding regular local elections.

"This decision was made after careful consideration of the proposals of political entities, as well as after a full analysis, in accordance with constitutional and legal deadlines," the Kosovo Presidency said in a statement.

The setting of this date, according to the Presidency, aims to enable full preparation of the electoral process by the responsible institutions, including the Central Election Commission (CEC) and other relevant institutions, "with the aim of respecting the highest standards of electoral administration."

Osmani called on political entities, organizations and civil society to approach it "with full responsibility in order to guarantee a comprehensive, orderly and fair process."

On June 4, Osmani met with representatives of political parties to consult on the date for holding regular local elections. Representatives of the Serbian List – the largest Serb party in Kosovo, which enjoys the support of Belgrade – did not attend the meeting.

During this meeting, the dates of October 5, 12 and 19 for holding the elections were mentioned.

Kosovo held its last local elections in October 2021.

The Democratic League of Kosovo had won in the most municipalities, ahead of the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

The setting of the date for local elections comes at a time when Kosovo is embroiled in a political crisis following the February parliamentary elections.

Since the elections, new institutions have not yet been created, while MPs have not yet managed to constitute the Assembly of Kosovo, which would pave the way for the creation of the new executive.

After the consultative meeting with Osmani on June 4, the representative of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albulena Haxhiu, stated that the meeting also discussed the possibility of holding extraordinary parliamentary elections, along with local elections.

Haxhiu said that she presented this idea, adding that holding two elections in one day was also supported by the PDK.

However, in order to hold extraordinary elections, it is necessary to constitute the Assembly and then, by political agreement, dissolve it and announce new elections./ REL
