Trump: Talks with China on tariffs on Monday

A move in the trade dispute between the two countries is expected after a phone conversation between US President Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi. Trump announced talks between delegations from both countries.

According to an announcement by US President Donald Trump, senior officials from the US and China will meet in London on Monday to hold further trade talks. The US delegation will be led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. The US president expressed optimism: "the meeting is expected to go very well."

Phone call with Xi Jinping

Trump agreed to the new round of talks in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday (June 5). According to President Trump, the talks are aimed at discussing the details of a trade agreement reached in May between the world's two largest economies.

After the phone call between the two presidents, China was much more reserved and urged the US to adhere to the terms and mutual rules included in the agreement. Beijing stated that the Chinese side has implemented the agreement seriously and conscientiously.

Efforts to de-escalate

Trump has been pursuing a tough course in trade policy towards China since taking office. At one point, the Republican even increased punitive tariffs on Chinese imports to the US to a staggering 145 percent, to which Beijing responded with counter-tariffs. In mid-May, the two sides agreed at a meeting in Switzerland to stop the spiral of escalation and agreed, at least temporarily, to a mutual reduction in the punitive tariffs./ DW
