Around 30 people were evacuated from their homes in the upper Val de Bagnes in the canton of Valais in Switzerland after heavy rainfall triggered a large mudslide.

Residents of the village of Les Epenays will be sheltered elsewhere for an indefinite period. "It depends on nature, it makes its own laws," Antoine Schaller, deputy secretary general of the Val de Bagnes commune, told local news.

The area saw strong storms last week, after which mud, wood and large rocks destroyed the temporary emergency bridge at the top of the Val de Bagnes, but residents said the buildings were spared.

"The concern is that the volumes are decreasing. And then there is the detachment zone on the mountain, where a whole section is moving at a speed of about two meters per day," said Pierre-Martin Moulin, Secretary General of Val de Bagnes.

Swiss glaciologists have repeatedly expressed concerns about the melting of glaciers in recent years, which is largely attributed to global warming and has accelerated the retreat of glaciers in Switzerland. /CNA
