Israel attacks Yemen's Hodeidah port, threatens naval and air blockade

The Israeli navy struck Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah on Tuesday, while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened the Houthi rebels with a naval and air blockade if they continue their attacks on Israel.

Houthi-controlled Al Masirah TV reported that Israel carried out two attacks on the docks of the Hodeidah port.

The Israeli military said in a statement that its navy struck Houthi targets, adding that the port is used by Houthi rebels to transport weapons.

No casualties have been reported so far.

The attacks came after the Israeli military on Monday called on people to leave the Houthi-controlled ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah and Salif.

"We warned the Houthi terrorist organization that if it continues to fire weapons at Israel, they will face a strong response and will be subjected to a naval and air blockade," Katz said in X.

Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, the Houthi rebels - allies of Iran - have carried out attacks on Israel and on shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade. They say they are doing so in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Most of the dozens of missiles and drones launched at Israel have been destroyed or shot down before reaching their targets. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes against the Houthis.

Israel has significantly weakened Iran's other allies in the region - Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Palestinian group Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Meanwhile, the Tehran-backed Houthi rebels and pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq are still standing firm./ REL
