Voters were deceived in the parliamentary elections/ Court revokes mandates of 3

A special court in Greece has annulled the seats in Parliament won by three members of the far-right Spartan Party, including that of the party's leader, Vassilis Stigas.

The justification behind the unprecedented decision to expel the trio from Parliament, according to Greek media outlet 'To Vima', is that the specific party deceived voters in the 2024 general elections, as its real leader is former lieutenant and imprisoned Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris.

The motions were filed against the three now-dismissed MPs, and not against all of the Spartans' candidates elected to Parliament. The other two MPs who lost their seats were Petros Dimitriadis and Alexandros Zerveas.

In another rare development, Greece's parliament will now have a plenary session of 297 deputies, instead of the usual 300, as the seats vacated by the trio will not be filled by second-placed candidates from the same party. Under the Greek constitution, the minimum with which the national legislature can function is 200.

As such, the parliamentary majority is now set at 149+1. /CNA
