Rising tensions with Iran / US evacuates embassy in Iraq

Non-essential U.S. embassy staff and dependents in Baghdad will be evacuated from Iraq due to heightened security risks, U.S. government sources said. Officials did not say exactly what prompted the departure, but they were told that Israel was preparing to launch an operation in Iran.

That was partly why some Americans were advised to leave the region, officials said, adding that they anticipated that Iran could retaliate against several US bases in Iraq.

This comes as US talks over Iran's nuclear program appear to have stalled in recent days.

The US envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, still plans to hold talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program on Sunday.

Witkoff will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Muscat, Axios reported.

A US State Department official told the BBC: "We are continuously assessing the appropriate conduct of personnel at all of our embassies."

Trump spoke about Iran at an appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, telling reporters that Americans were advised to leave the region "because it can be a dangerous place and we'll see what happens."

Trump also reiterated that the US did not want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon: "We will not allow that."

The president hopes to reach a deal to stop Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Trump said on Wednesday that he was losing more and more confidence that Iran would stop enriching uranium.
