Ukraine and Russia carry out fourth exchange of prisoners of war

Ukraine and Russia have carried out another exchange of prisoners of war, the fourth in a week, the warring parties said on Saturday, in line with agreements reached in Istanbul earlier this month.

"We continue to release our people from Russian captivity. This is the fourth exchange in a week," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media.

Kiev also said it had received another group of 1,200 unidentified bodies from Russia, which Russia said belonged to Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel, as part of the Istanbul agreements.

"In accordance with the Russian-Ukrainian agreements, another group of Russian servicemen returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime," the Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram.

Photos published by Zelensky on Telegram showed men of various ages, dressed in camouflage and draped in Ukrainian flags.

The exchange came as Russia repeatedly rejected calls for a ceasefire and intensified its offensive along the front line, and particularly in the northeastern Sumy region, where it seeks to create a "buffer zone" to protect its Kursk region, which was previously partially occupied by Ukraine. /CNA
