German government: War with Iran is not a NATO issue

The war in Iran does not concern the Western military alliance NATO and Germany will not participate in using military assets to secure the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping during the conflict, a German government spokesman said today.

"This war has nothing to do with NATO. This is not NATO's war ," said Stefan Kornelius, saying that the alliance was there to protect the territories of its members and that there was no mandate for its deployment in the current case.

"As long as this war continues, there will be no participation, not even in any attempt to keep the Strait of Hormuz open by military means ," he said.

His statements echoed those of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Brussels on Monday.

"I don't see that NATO has taken any decision in this regard or taken responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz. If that were the case, then NATO bodies would deal with the issue accordingly ," Wadephul said ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

US President Donald Trump has called on European allies to help protect the strait, a vital oil shipping route, warning that otherwise, NATO faces a "very bad" future.

Maritime transport on the waterways has come to a virtual standstill due to the risk of Iranian attacks in response to the US-Israeli offensive against the Islamic Republic. /CNA
