 Drone hits fuel tank/Dubai Airport temporarily suspends flights

Dubai's main airport temporarily halted flights after a drone hit a fuel tank and caused a fire. The airport's media office said emergency services said one of the fuel tanks was hit, but no injuries were reported.

The airport also announced that the suspension of flights was a precautionary measure, while they gradually resumed again this morning.

Passengers have been advised to contact airlines as only flights to certain destinations will resume from 10:00 local time.

Several UK flights bound for Dubai turned back mid-flight, according to tracking data from Flightradar24. Emirates flights departing from Dublin and London Heathrow were diverted over Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

This is the third such incident at the airport since the war began. Numerous drones and missiles have hit the city-state in recent weeks, tarnishing its image as a safe haven, although many have been shot down.

More than 2,000 airstrikes are estimated to have hit the wider Gulf region since the outbreak of the war. A 60-year-old British man is one of a number of people who have been charged under Dubai's cybercrime laws for publishing or sharing footage of the incidents. Authorities there claim it is necessary to maintain public safety. /CNA
