Michigan synagogue attack/IDF: Perpetrator was brother of Hezbollah commander

The Israeli military said today that the brother of the man who rammed his explosives-laden car into a synagogue in Michigan on Thursday was a Hezbollah commander who was killed in an airstrike last week.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the brother of the synagogue attacker, Ibrahim Mohammed Ghazali, was responsible for managing weapons operations in the Iranian-backed Badr unit.

As an IDF spokesman pointed out, Ibrahim Ghazali was killed on March 5 following an IDF attack on a Hezbollah military building used for weapons storage.

On Thursday, 41-year-old Ayman Ghazali drove a vehicle packed with explosives into the Temple Israel synagogue, which then burst into flames. The attack was described by the FBI as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. According to police, Ghazali was killed by temple security officers, who neutralized the threat.

One security officer was injured and at least 30 officers received first aid for smoke inhalation, while more than 100 children in the building were not injured, according to authorities.

Suspicious contacts with Hezbollah

Ayman Ghazali, who is originally from Lebanon and came to the United States in 2011 on a visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen, became a U.S. citizen himself in 2016. He was working at a Middle Eastern restaurant when his wife filed for divorce in 2024, and the divorce was finalized in March 2025.

In 2019, he had traveled abroad and his travels were being monitored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, having been listed as a targeted individual due to his prior contacts with Hezbollah suspects.

Upon his return to the United States via Atlanta, his phone was searched, which found contacts with individuals known or suspected to be members of Hezbollah. He was listed in U.S. government databases for connections to known or suspected terrorists affiliated with Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to U.S. law enforcement officials.

However, despite his ties to the organization, he was not listed as a member of Hezbollah in government databases. A week before the attack, two of Ghazal's brothers and two of their children were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. The mayor of Masghara, where they lived, confirmed the tragedy and said the attacks also targeted financial institutions linked to Hezbollah. /CNA
