Pope Leo condemns violence in Iran war/ calls for ceasefire

Pope Leo XIII called today for an immediate ceasefire in the escalating war in Iran, expressing his regret over the horrific violence that he said has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.

As the US-Israel war enters its third week, the head of the Roman Catholic Church warned that violence will not lead to the justice, stability and peace that the people of the region desire.

"For two weeks now, the people of the Middle East have suffered from the terrible violence of war. In the name of Christians in the Middle East and of all women and men of good faith, I appeal to those responsible for this war: Make a ceasefire," the Pope said during his weekly prayer in St. Peter's Square.

"Thousands of innocent people have been killed and many others have been forced to flee their homes. I reiterate my closeness to all those who have lost their loved ones in the attacks ," he stressed.

Pope Leo added that the situation in Lebanon, which has been rocked by a war between Israel and the pro-Iranian organization Hezbollah, is also a cause for great concern.

"I hope that there will be channels of dialogue that can support the country's authorities in implementing sustainable solutions to the serious crisis that is unfolding, for the common good of all the Lebanese people," he stressed. /CNA
