Middle East Conflict/ Hamas' Rare Appeal to Iran

The Palestinian armed group Hamas has called on Iran to stop attacks on Gulf states, a rare appeal to its main ally in the region.

The Tehran-backed group called on its "brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighboring countries," in a statement , adding that all regional nations should cooperate " to preserve the bonds of brotherhood."

At the same time, Hamas, which controls Gaza, defended Tehran's right to defend itself against US and Israeli attacks, which are continuing to hit Iran.

Iranian authorities have said their retaliatory strikes are targeting US installations on Gulf soil and not the neighbors themselves, but many of the attacks have hit civilian infrastructure. Hamas said on Saturday it had been following the war in the region with deep concern. The group called on "all states and international organizations to work for an immediate cessation of the war."

Iran has not yet commented publicly on Hamas's statement. Tehran's retaliatory drone and missile attacks have been felt by many of its Gulf neighbors over the past two weeks. At least 18 people have been killed across the region so far, most of them security personnel or foreign workers.

Six people were killed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and six in Kuwait, while Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain reported two deaths each. Iran is Hamas's biggest backer in terms of funding, weapons and political support.

The Palestinian group has called the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, in joint US-Israeli strikes on the first day of the war, on February 28, a heinous crime. Hamas is a member of Iran's "axis of resistance" - a loose coalition aimed at countering US and Israeli influence. /CNA
