Renowned German philosopher Jurgen Habermas passes away

Jurgen Habermas, world-renowned German philosopher and sociologist, passed away today in the town of Starnberg near Munich, where he had lived since 1971. The news was announced by the Suhrkamp publishing house.

One of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, he was active until his final years and was one of the few public intellectuals in Germany who regularly took a stand on political issues, DW writes.

He defended the NATO bombing of Kosovo in 1999, arguing that no one has the right to abandon the victims and leave them to their executioners.

"When there is no other way, democratic neighbors must intervene for emergency assistance legitimized by international law ," Habermas declared to "Die Zeit" in April 1999.

While defending the right to asylum during the 2015 migrant crisis and a united European Union in the face of right-wing populism and nationalism, Habermas remained actively committed to his cosmopolitan ideal of an open and rigorous democracy.

He was awarded the German-French Media Prize in 2018 and, after turning 90 the following year, published a two-volume, 1,700-page work, “This Too a History of Philosophy,” a look at the evolution of rationality and human reason that the Boston Review called “a masterpiece of erudition and synthesis.”

Having received important international awards throughout his career, including the 2007 Holberg Memorial International Prize, worth around 520,000 euros, in 2021 he accepted and then declined a 225,000 euro prize from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With the Gulf's absolutist monarchy accused of oppression, he decided it was a "mistake" to accept the prize as it was seen as contradicting his principles of freedom of thought and open democratic debate. /CNA
