US sends 10,000 anti-drones to Middle East

The United States has deployed about 10,000 anti-drone drones to the Middle East in an effort to counter Iran's growing drone attacks in the region. The deployment comes within five days of the start of a military standoff between the US, Israel and Iran on February 28.

According to US officials, the drones are designed to detect, track and shoot down enemy drones, offering a cheaper and more effective means of protection compared to the use of expensive missile defense systems.

The anti-drone systems, known as Merops, have previously been tested in the war in Ukraine, where they have managed to shoot down hundreds of Shahed drones. Each interceptor drone costs much less than traditional air defense missiles, making them more suitable for use against massive drone attacks.

Their deployment to the region comes at a time when tensions have risen sharply and missile and drone attacks have been reported against US bases and allies in the Middle East. /CNA
