UN chief calls on Israel and Hezbollah: Stop bombing and fighting

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah to stop fighting as the conflict between the two sides escalates. During a visit to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, Guterres called on both sides to stop the bombing.

"Stop the fighting. Stop the bombing. There is no military solution. Hezbollah missiles and drones were fired at targets in northern Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan. This was followed by devastating Israeli bombing operations and general evacuation announcements, rendering large parts of Lebanon uninhabitable ," Guterres said at a press conference.

Israel has raised the possibility of a major ground operation in Lebanon, amid the massive displacement of Lebanese citizens. Regarding this, Guterres said that the Lebanese people did not choose this war, but were drawn into it.

The UN chief joins other world leaders advocating for peace, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who earlier today urged Israel to hold direct talks with Lebanon, while calling on the Israeli military to abandon any large-scale offensive and stop its mass attacks. /CNA
