US Embassy in Baghdad urges American citizens to leave Iraq immediately

The US embassy in Baghdad has urged its citizens to leave Iraq immediately after a drone attack on its building overnight.

Through a response on its official website, the embassy states that Iran poses a major threat to public security in Iraq.

“Iran and its affiliated terrorist militias pose a major threat to public security in Iraq. Attacks have occurred against American citizens, American interests, and critical infrastructure. These groups have targeted American diplomatic facilities, American companies, and U.S.-managed energy infrastructure, and have threatened to continue to target them. Iranian-affiliated terrorist militias have also attacked hotels frequented by foreigners and other U.S.-affiliated facilities throughout Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

"Americans face the risk of kidnapping, and American individuals have been directly targeted. Iranian-linked terrorist militias could hinder the ability of Iraqi authorities to respond effectively to emergencies. U.S. citizens should depart Iraq immediately. U.S. citizens who choose to remain in Iraq are encouraged to reconsider their decision given the significant threat posed by Iranian-linked terrorist militias ," the embassy said in a statement. 

The embassy further adds that the US stands ready to assist those citizens who want to leave Iraq by providing detailed information on available departure options.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide you with updates so that you can make decisions regarding your safety. If you wish to leave Iraq, the U.S. government stands ready to assist you by providing the latest information on available departure options. Nothing is a higher priority for President Trump, Secretary Rubio, and the State Department than the safety and security of American citizens ,” the embassy statement said. /CNA
