High fuel prices/ SPD and CDU call for relief measures for drivers

Politicians from Germany's ruling coalition have called for urgent measures to tackle rising vehicle fuel prices caused by the United States and Israel's war with Iran.

In an interview with the German news agency DPA, Armand Zorn, deputy chairman of the parliamentary group of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), called for a cap on fuel prices.

"Gasoline and diesel prices should not increase more significantly than the price of crude oil. We should not rule out strong interventions, such as corporate restructuring of the industry. We will be able to act at any time and are prepared to take further measures to limit prices," Zorn told DPA.

Meanwhile, the premier of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze, from the center-right Christian Democratic Party (CDU), has called for a reduction in fuel taxes. He noted that tax revenues would increase as a result of the fuel price increase.

"The federal treasury should not benefit from the oil price crisis ," Schulze told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Fuel prices in Germany have risen by more than a fifth since the start of the war with Iran on February 28. Drivers currently pay an average of around 2.08 euros per liter for gasoline (Super E5) and up to 2.18 euros for diesel. Prices are even higher on major highways.

A working group appointed by the coalition parties in the Bundestag will meet on Monday to decide what measures can be taken. /CNA
