Trump warns NATO about future if Strait of Hormuz not secured

US President Donald Trump has warned that the future of NATO could face serious consequences if allies do not contribute to securing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for global oil transport.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said it would be “very bad for the future of NATO” if allies did not help secure the strategic strait. He added that he expected China to play a role in resolving the situation and warned that he could postpone a possible summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping if that did not happen.

During a statement aboard Air Force One, Trump said he is in talks with about seven countries to discuss the possibility of “policing” the strait. He stressed that he will keep in mind which countries decide not to get involved.

Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. Reports of heavy bombing have come from Tehran, while Iran and Hezbollah have fired missiles at Israel. Saudi Arabia has announced that it has shot down dozens of drones overnight.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran has not requested a ceasefire and sees no reason for talks with the United States, stressing that Iran was in dialogue with Washington when, according to him, the attacks were carried out.

Meanwhile, Dubai International Airport, one of the world's busiest, has temporarily suspended flights after a drone incident. One passenger said passengers waited on the tarmac for about 40 minutes without being informed about the situation.

Tehran residents have also expressed their fears about increased security checks. One resident told the BBC that he has also changed the way he dresses to avoid attention: "I always wear colorful clothes, but now I don't wear them anymore."/ CNA
