Worked for Russian oligarch / McGonigal pleads guilty, appears contrite in court

Former FBI counterintelligence chief Charles McGonigal pleaded guilty Tuesday to one of the charges against him.

Specifically, McGonigal has pleaded guilty to a 2021 charge of conspiracy on behalf of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

He answered a series of questions on Tuesday about the illegal scheme for Deripaska.

McGonigal told the jury he was "deeply remorseful" for his actions.

" I appear before you in this court to take full responsibility as my actions were never intended to hurt the United States, the FBI, my family and friends," he said, reports CNN .

" I agreed with another party to collect disparaging information about a Russian oligarch named Vladimir Potanin, who was a business competitor of Oleg Deripaska.

I knew that Deripaska had been placed on the sanctions list by the US government. I understood that the information I gathered would ultimately be used to put Potan on the US sanctions list.

I understood that the work I did would provide some benefit to Deripaska, and under US law, I was not supposed to provide any service to Deripaska, even indirectly," the former FBI official stated.

Upon pleading guilty, McGonigal could face a maximum sentence of five years. The court date is set for December 14./ CNA
