Violent protests in Nepal/ Army takes control of capital, ministers evacuated

Armed soldiers took control of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, today, ordering residents to stay indoors and enforcing a curfew after violent protests burned government buildings and attacked politicians.

Armed troops were deployed across Nepal's capital, stopping vehicles and searching people, as the army intervened for the first time after police failed to contain the unrest. Officials said 21 people were arrested for looting.

The unrest escalated after police shot dead 19 demonstrators on Monday during protests led by young people angry at a government ban on social media platforms.

Although the ban was lifted on Tuesday, tens of thousands of people returned to the streets, attacking offices and blocking roads.

Helicopters evacuated ministers to safety and the prime minister's resignation has done little to calm the anger. /CNA
