New proposal from the Spanish government/ Plans to ban smoking in open spaces

The Spanish government will propose a complete ban on smoking and e-cigarettes in open public spaces.

A draft law will ban smoking, among other things, at outdoor tables in bars and restaurants, at open-air concerts and in areas near schools and hospitals. The bill will be subject to a public consultation before being submitted to Parliament.

"Smoking is one of the main threats to public health and causes 30% of cancers. Every space we gain from smoking is a space we gain for health and life," said Health Minister Monica García.

Smoking in enclosed public spaces, such as government offices, bars and restaurants, has been banned since 2005.

According to government estimates, one in four Spaniards smokes every day, and the number of underage smokers is on the rise, largely due to e-cigarettes and new flavored products. According to a 2023 government survey, about 55% of teenagers aged 14 to 18 have tried e-cigarettes.

More than 50,000 people die each year in Spain from smoking-related diseases, such as lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to the Ministry of Health./ CNA
