Devastating earthquake in Afghanistan/ UN appeals for emergency aid funds

The United Nations is making an emergency appeal for nearly $140 million in urgently needed funds to help nearly half a million people affected by the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

Afghan authorities have said the 6.0-magnitude earthquake on August 31 and the subsequent aftershocks that followed killed more than 2,200 people in the country's rugged, mountainous east. Many of the hardest-hit areas have been particularly difficult to reach, with some accessible only by helicopter.

The UN said in a statement that the four-month emergency response plan of $139.6 million would allow humanitarian organizations to assist the 457,000 people who have been affected in Kunar, Laghman and Nangarhar provinces.

The UN has said it has so far been able to visit only 49 of the 411 affected villages due to damaged roads in the rugged terrain.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations have carried out relief operations to provide food, shelter and medical care. /CNA
