"Europe is at war"/ Von der Leyen: New solution to finance the war in

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today that Europe is fighting for a united and peaceful continent.

In her speech to the European Parliament, the EU chief focused mainly on the war in Ukraine, for which she said that work is urgently underway on a new solution to finance Ukraine's war effort using Russian fixed assets.

“Europe is at war. A war for a united and peaceful continent. For a free and independent Europe. A war for our values ??and democracies. A war for our freedom and our ability to determine our own destiny. Let there be no doubt: this is a war for our future. This is Russia’s war. And it is Russia that must pay. That is why we must urgently work on a new solution to finance Ukraine’s war effort using Russian fixed assets.

 With the cash balances tied up in these Russian assets, we could offer Ukraine a reparations loan. The assets themselves would remain intact. And the risk would have to be borne collectively. Ukraine would only repay the loan when Russia had paid the reparations. The money would help Ukraine today. But it would also be essential for Ukraine’s security in the medium and long term. For example, financing strong Ukrainian armed forces as the first line of security guarantees.

"What is happening in Gaza has shocked the conscience of the world. People killed while begging for food. Mothers holding dead children. These images are simply catastrophic. So I want to start with a very clear message: man-made hunger can never be a weapon of war. For the sake of children, for the sake of humanity, this must end," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen./ CNA
