European Commission chief calls for sanctions and partial suspension of trade

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that she will seek sanctions and a partial suspension of trade with Israel due to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The European Union, which has 27 member states, is deeply divided over its approach to Israel and the Palestinians, and it is not clear whether it will find the necessary majority to support sanctions and trade measures against Israel.

"What is happening in Gaza has shocked the conscience of the world," von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Von der Leyen added that the commission "will create next month a donor group for the Palestinians" part of which will focus on the future reconstruction of Gaza.

"Man-made hunger can never be a weapon of war. For the sake of children, for the sake of humanity. This must stop," she added, drawing applause in Parliament.

Her speech came a day after the Israeli military warned residents of Gaza City to evacuate, before launching a wide-ranging offensive to take control of the city, which is said to be the last bastion of Hamas - the group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Israel made the warning on Tuesday before an attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar, where negotiations to end the war in Gaza appeared to have stalled.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants kidnapped 251 people on October 7, 2023, and killed about 1,200 others, mostly Israeli civilians.

There are also 48 hostages being held in Gaza, about 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Israel's war of revenge has killed over 64,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, displaced almost the entire population and devastated much of the territory.

Many parts of major cities have been completely destroyed and about 90% of the estimated 2 million Palestinians have been displaced internally./ REL
