Poland seeks activation of Article 4 of the NATO Treaty

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament that 19 unauthorized entries into Polish airspace had been recorded overnight, most of the drones coming from Belarus.

He added that three drones have been confirmed to have been shot down, while a fourth is most likely to have been hit.

"The fact that these drones, which posed a security threat, were shot down changes the political situation. For this reason, consultations with allies took the form of a formal request to activate Article 4 of the NATO Treaty," Tusk said.

Article 4 of the NATO Treaty states that "The Parties shall consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened."
