Protests in Turkey against violence against women

Hundreds of women have protested in Turkish cities against femicide, after two cases were reported in Istanbul.

Hundreds of people have shouted loudly against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AKP party.

"You are a Government that allows the killing of women", said the organizer of the march, Gunesh Fadime Ahsahin, in front of the crowd.

Gulizar Sezer, the mother of a young woman who was killed, said that the "massacre of our daughters" must be stopped.

Her daughter's body was found in June, after first being thrown into the sea, wrapped in a carpet.

Other protests have been held in Ankara and Izmir, according to the Federation for Women's Rights.

Similar protests have been held every day during the week, in different cities, mostly on university campuses.

The protests have erupted since the murder of two young women in the last week, within 30 minutes.

The murder suspect then killed himself.

The suspect and the two women were both 19 years old, officials said.

Erdogan, who has previously blamed alcohol and social media for such killings, vowed on Wednesday to strengthen the judicial system and fight crime.

Turkey has been recording cases of murder of women for years.

A monitoring group has said that this year alone, 299 murders of women were committed in the country with 85 million inhabitants.

In 2021, Turkey withdrew from a Council of Europe convention on the prevention of violence against women, known as the Istanbul Convention.

The Convention obliges the national authorities to investigate and punish the perpetrators of women./ REL
