Dacic: A war crimes suspect was detained in Horgosh

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, at the same time the Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dacic, said that at the border crossing point between Serbia and Hungary, Horgosh, a person with the initials MI was arrested, under suspicion of having committed war crimes against the civilian population, in June 1999 in Pristina.

According to the announcement of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, Dacic claimed that the detainee, together with several members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), committed war crimes through the use of physical force, weapons and threats against residents of Serbian nationality, who , according to him, were then sent to makeshift prisons and mistreated.

By order of the Prosecutor's Office, it has been said that the detainee will be detained for 48 hours.

Dacic said that due to the ongoing investigations, he cannot give more details.

Radio Free Europe has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo and the Liaison Office of Kosovo in Belgrade, to understand if it is a question of any citizen of Kosovo, but has not received a response.

In the past, citizens of Kosovo have been arrested several times, under such claims.

The Kosovo authorities consider these detentions as arbitrary and unjust and seek the help of the international factor for their release.

Serbia, in its 2021-2026 national war crimes prosecution strategy, claims it has jurisdiction to bring justice to crimes committed during armed conflicts in the 1990s.

Kosovo and Serbia reached an Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in 2013, with the mediation of the European Union, but there has been almost no cooperation between them on war crimes cases./ Rel
