US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said Washington is still working to prevent a major war in the Middle East, and called on Israel to protect civilians after 22 people were killed in attacks on the center of Beirut.

Blinken spoke a day after Israeli airstrikes targeted two buildings in Beirut, one of which was completely destroyed.

"We continue to be intensively engaged to prevent a wider conflict in the region," Blinken told reporters after an East Asia Summit in Laos, adding that it was "very important" for Israel to ensure that civilians are safe. protected during the conflict.

Lebanese sources said at least one senior Hezbollah figure had been targeted in the attacks, the third in a row in Beirut since Israel launched a campaign in southern Lebanon last month against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.

These actions have raised fears of a major regional war.

Hezbollah, the militant group and political party that controls much of southern Lebanon, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted only the armed wing, but not the party, which has seats in Parliament of Lebanon.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television said after the attacks that attempts to kill Wafiq Safani, a senior security official for the group, had failed.

Reports say that Safa was not in any of the targeted buildings.

Safa heads a department responsible for working with Lebanon's security agencies, the sources said.

In another incident, on October 10, the United Nations peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon said that an Israeli tank hit the building where their headquarters are located in the town of Naqoura, and as a result two peacekeepers were injured.

The nationality of the peacekeepers has not been disclosed.
