The EU will impose new sanctions on Iran

The European Union (EU) will impose new sanctions against individuals and entities linked to Iran early next week, various sources told Radio Free Europe (REL) on October 11.

According to three European sources who spoke to REL on condition of anonymity, the sanctions are expected to be approved on October 14 and will most likely include the Iranian airline, Iran Air.

A source pointed out that EU ambassadors have already given the preliminary green light for this on October 9.

"Yes, sanctions will be imposed on Monday in response to the shipment, and there may be sectoral sanctions after that," another source told RER, referring to the transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia.

After the United States, Britain, France and Germany accused Iran of supplying Russia with missiles about a month ago, the three European countries announced their plans to impose sanctions on Iran Air, the state airline.

At the time, the German Foreign Ministry told REL that European allies are working on the issue.

Iran Air operates direct flights to several cities in Europe, including Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Paris and Milan.

The possibility of new EU sanctions comes just days after Peter Stano, the EU's spokesman, told RER he was "optimistic" about the EU's relationship with Iran.

Stano stressed that the EU's relations with Iran "have been at their lowest point for a long time" underlining that the freshest reason is the support that Iran has given to Russia in its illegal occupation of Ukraine, supplying it with drones and recently also with rockets.

Repression in Iran, arbitrary detention of EU citizens and uranium enrichment are other factors that have made the Islamic republic's relations with the EU "complicated" and "sensitive", according to Stanos./ Rel
