Florida residents return to homes flooded by Hurricane Milton

Florida residents are returning to their homes after evacuations from Hurricane Milton. Traffic blocked one of the main highways as well as other roads leading to the coast. Authorities said Milton has killed at least 16 people.

According to officials, the number of victims could have been even higher if there had not been mass evacuations.

The fresh panorama of devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which hit just two weeks ago, may have served to drive many people away from at-risk areas, according to officials.

"Helene likely served as a stark reminder of how vulnerable certain areas are to storms, particularly coastal regions," said Craig Fugate, who served as administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency under President Barack Obama.

"When people see firsthand what can happen, especially in neighboring areas, it can serve to change their minds about what they should do," he said.

In the coastal town of Punta Gorda, Mayor Lynne Matthews said authorities had to rescue only three people from flooding, compared with 121 when Helene hit.

"A lot of people obeyed evacuation orders," Mr Matthews told a news conference on Friday, noting that local authorities made sure residents listened to them.

As of Friday evening, the number of people without power in Florida was estimated at 1.9 million, while 260,000 residents of St. Petersburg were asked to boil their water before using it, at least until Monday.

Gov. Ron DeSantis warned people to be vigilant, citing ongoing threats that could come from downed power poles or flooded buildings that could hide dangerous objects.

"We are currently in that period where fatalities are preventable," Mr. DeSantis said Friday. "You have to make the right decisions and know the dangers that threaten you", he added./ Voa
