E-cigarette users surpass smokers for the first time in the UK

For the first time in the UK, there are more people over the age of 16 using e-cigarettes or electronic cigarettes than smoking cigarettes, according to the country's Office for National Statistics.

About 5.4 million adults use e-cigarettes daily or occasionally, compared to 4.9 million who use cigarettes. Daily e-cigarette use is most common among those aged 25-49, with an increase in use among women.

The popularity of smoking has declined over the past decade, as the harmful effects of tobacco have encouraged many people to quit, while the less risky use of e-cigarettes has increased, especially among younger age groups.

According to reports, smoking is responsible for 70,000 deaths each year and is the leading cause of preventable death in the UK.

But a lot has changed since then. In 2006-2007, a ban on smoking in public places and enclosed workplaces was passed, and in 2015, a ban on smoking in cars with children was passed.

More recently, in 2017, plain packaging for cigarettes was introduced. And government legislation currently being passed in parliament, called the Tobacco and E-Cigarettes Bill, will soon mean that anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, will no longer be legally allowed to buy tobacco in the UK. /CNA
