Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, said that based on the information he has, the Serbian citizen in Leposavic, who authorities said was injured and kidnapped by the Serbian Gendarmerie – was attacked because he "is an opponent of the policies and regime of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?."
Kosovo Police announced on November 3 that MV, a Kosovo citizen, was allegedly injured and kidnapped on November 1 in Kosovo on the border with Serbia, adding that according to witnesses he was later transported to a hospital in Niš. Kurti said that according to information, this case occurred within Kosovo territory.
"It is clear that our northern neighbor is continuing with its attacks aimed at disciplining Serbs and destabilizing Kosovo. But I am convinced that with our security and intelligence bodies, in cooperation with international partners, it will fail on these two fronts ," Kurti said during a press conference on November 4, when asked about the issue.
He requested support from the international community for Kosovo, but also "punishment of those who order and execute such criminal actions, with a destabilizing tendency."
Kurti said that since the incident occurred, the Police, with the assistance of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, have been at the scene and are conducting investigations.
It is suspected that the scene of the incident is located in the territory of Kosovo, namely within the area called "ground zero", near the Leposavic area.
Radio Free Europe has confirmed from several sources that the person suspected of being injured and kidnapped is Milan Vukašinovi? from Leposavic - one of four Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo. His family's lawyer, Ivan Nini?, told REL that he does not know the motives for Vukašinovi?'s injury.
According to him, there is information that Vukašinovi? was in conflict with representatives of the Serbian List - the main Serb party in Kosovo that has the support of Belgrade - because he did not want to "obey" their policies.
"I cannot say that this case has a political background, but I can say that the person from Ljukovska Banja, with whom Milan had friendly relations and with whom he was scheduled to meet, is an active member of the Serbian Army. I suspect that this is a much broader operation, in which Milan was lured," he said.
The lawyer also spoke about Vukašinovi?'s health condition. He said that during the transport to the hospital in Niš, Vukašinovi? lost a lot of blood, had a kidney removed, had blood drained from his lungs, and had his pulmonary diaphragm removed.
According to him, he is in the intensive care unit and it is still unknown whether he will survive. The authorities in Serbia, nor the Serbian List, have yet to comment on this case. /REL
